Summer Camp - Empowering the Next Generation

Education

We are grounded in six core values: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, courage, and inclusion. These values are intentionally embedded into every aspect of the camp experience and serve as the foundation for all programming and interactions.

Camper’s practice caring by building empathy, supporting their peers, and contributing to a community where everyone feels valued. Honesty is reinforced through open communication, integrity in actions, and accountability in daily interactions. Respect is cultivated as campers learn to appreciate differences, listen to others, and engage positively with both peers and staff. Through shared responsibilities and decision-making opportunities, campers develop a strong sense of responsibility for themselves, their actions, and their community.

Equally important, YMCA of the Pines camp encourages courage, empowering youth to step outside of their comfort zones, try new activities, and build confidence in their abilities. Whether it is participating in a new challenge, speaking up, or taking on leadership roles, campers learn to embrace growth and resilience. Inclusion is woven throughout the camp culture, ensuring that every child regardless of background, ability, or identity feels welcomed, supported, and able to fully participate. This commitment creates a sense of belonging that is critical to healthy youth development.

Leadership development is a central component of the YMCA of the Pines camp model. Campers are encouraged to take initiative, build independence, and grow into leaders among their peers. These opportunities, grounded in the organization’s core values, help youth develop critical life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making. As campers grow in confidence and self-awareness, they begin to see themselves as capable individuals who can positively influence others.

The impact of this approach is both immediate and long-lasting. One camper, a young boy from a single-parent household, attended YMCA of the Pines camp on scholarship while his mother was undergoing cancer treatment. When he arrived, he was withdrawn and struggling emotionally. Over time, he began to engage, form friendships, and embrace the supportive, values-driven environment around him. By the end of the summer, he had developed greater confidence, a sense of belonging, and the ability to navigate challenges more effectively. For him, camp was not just a summer activity, it was a turning point that provided stability, encouragement, and hope during a critical moment in his life.

Experiences like this demonstrate how YMCA of the Pines camp helps shape not only individual outcomes, but broader community well-being. When young people develop strong character, guided by values such as caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, courage, and inclusion, they are better equipped to contribute positively to their communities. They grow into adults who are empathetic, ethical, and prepared to lead. In this way, investing in youth development today directly strengthens the social fabric of tomorrow.

YMCA of the Pines summer camp directly supports the development of confident, capable, and compassionate young people. Each experience opens the door for a child to build skills, form meaningful relationships, and discover their potential. These experiences have lasting effects, shaping not only individual futures but also the strength and resilience of our communities.

By empowering young people through the intentional integration of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, courage, and inclusion, YMCA of the Pines camp is helping to build a stronger, more connected society one child at a time.
