Rare patient alert!

Member News

Like many of the area’s waterfowl, this bird was struggling to find open water and food. The recent snow storms and long-term freezing temperatures have made it difficult for water birds to maintain good health. Our Wildlife Rehabilitators are providing him with supportive care with hopes to release him when the weather has improved and water sources are more open and conducive.

Greater Scaup are a medium-sized duck that dive to feed on mollusks, insects, and aquatic plants. They are able to dive up to 23 feet to find their food! Greater Scaup breed in the tundra regions of North America and Europe, however in winter they can be found along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. They can also be found in the Great Lakes during migration and the winter months. Greater Scaup are different from Lesser Scaup not only in size, but in head shape. The Lesser Scaup has a peaked head and a flatter neck region, while the Great Scaup’s head is more rounded.

Waterfowl like this Greater Scaup can be in our care for up to 8 weeks at a time, costing $50 each on average.
